Amorgos is the easternmost island of the Greek Cyclades island group.
The island’s oblong shape seems to protect the eastern small Cyclades island group. Varsamitis is located on the road connecting Chora with Kato Meria and owes its name to the varsamos (wild spearmint) plant that grows in the vicinity.
In the heart of Chora, in the mansion of Gavras Venetian Tower, the visitor can see various sculptures, statues, reliefs and architectural items from the archaic period to the 3rd Century A.D, discovered mainly in the three ancient cities of Amorgos, i.e. Aigiali, Arkesini and Minoa. In the area of Kato Meria, through the fields, the visitor can see a unique and well preserved ancient monument, an isolated fortress of rectangular shape dated to the 4th century B.C.
The monument has been recently awarded by Europa Nostra for its exemplary restoration.
