Koufonisia belong to the complex of Small East Cyclades Islands. They consist of two small islands, the Ano and Kato Koufonisi. On a community level, apart from these two islands, Keros Island and many smaller islands are also included in Koufonisia group. Keros and Kato Koufonisi are uninhabited but they house findings from the Cycladic civilization. Having rented a rib boat, you will find yourself amazed by the magnificent colors of Koufonisia throughout the course of a day.
In Ano Koufonisi, the most famous beaches are Pori, Foinikas and Platia Pounta. These are sandy beaches with cool and clear waters that resemble exotic places. Many visitors claim that the island’s beaches are much similar to those of the Caribbean. On most beaches you can go by foot but those who have rented a rib boat will have better and easier access. Moreover, a rib boat will help you discover other small bays around the island and be enchanted by the natural landscapes.
On the contrary, Kato Koufonisi is untouched by the elements of culture as there is only one small tavern that operates without electricity. Detis and Nero beaches are the wildest and most remote beaches of the island. But what you will see and experience on the island cannot be described in words because in fact, this is a place to witness beauty and calmness by renting a rib boat.
As Koufonisia islands have many fishermen, the first course served is fish cooked in all versions. Grilled or fried, cooked or as soup, fish is rather tasty because it will definitely be very fresh. Also “patatato” dish is braised local meat from wild goat with potatoes in the oven and is definitely a must-try dish. Crunchy “kserotigana” and tasty “pastelia” are made with care with local honey and scented leaves of lemon.
